Connecting Year 7 Art students with the gallery world

Richard Chelotti, 7G

Recent research indicates that there is a definite link between critical reflection in art and cognitive development across a broad range of subject areas. A study in art appreciation, deciphering narrative encoded in the visual arts, is an excellent way to pursue individual and group enquiry. This process can be all the more exciting when presented with the original art works introduced by the artist herself.

Deborah Walker’s survey exhibition, Homage to the Infinite, currently on show at the Stonington Stables Museum of Art, Deakin University, provided an excellent extension to classroom activities. Year 7F and 7G Art students also took the opportunity to further their understanding of sculpture and architecture while improving their observation and sketching skills.
