In the recent Melbourne University Mathematics Competition, Scotch College students achieved outstanding results.
In the senior division Daniel Mathews (Yr 12) was placed second and Hiroshi Miyazaki (Yr 11) achieved third place. Geoffrey Chu (Yr 9), Seung-Hoon Baek (Yr 10) and Oliver Ng (Yr 9) achieved Outstanding Awards.
In the Junior Division Scotch College students achieved both the First and Second Prize.
Francis Connon was awarded the First Prize and the Sir Thomas Cherry Prize. Umesh Rajadevan was awarded the Second Prizes.
In the Australian Mathematics Competition 36 students were awarded prizes. This is the greatest number ever. Prizes are awarded to the top 0.3% of students. Geoffrey Chu and Oliver Ng both of Yr 9 received medals in the competition. There are only 40 medals presented in a competition of over 530,000 students.
Daniel Mathews represented Australia in the International Mathematics Olympiad. This year the competition was held in Argentina and Daniel received a silver medal. This follows his bronze medal in Mumbai, India in 1996. He is the first Scotch student to represent the school in consecutive Mathematics Olympiads.
