Fourth win in cross country

For the fourth time since Cross Country became a premiership sport in 1991, Scotch was victorious. With two second placings and one third over this period, as well, it is easy to see why the school has a reputation for developing outstanding distance runners.

The 1998 APS competition was remarkably even, with Brighton Grammar widely favoured and strong teams representing other schools. The potential of our team was not widely recognised until the season was well underway.

The results of many races ultimately depended on the individual performances of just one or two team members. Early victories by Scotch against Melbourne Grammar School, around the Tan track, followed by wins over Carey and Geelong Grammar, raised hopes of success.

The race against Brighton Grammar was the pivotal one of the season. With Scotch and Brighton entering the race undefeated, this event ultimately served to decide the premiership. Showing great focus and determination, our athletes won the race by 19 points, in a fine display of team running.

Captain, Andrew Steel, consistently finished in the top eight runners. Other prominent performers in the Open team included Marc Valmorbida and James Rice. Under 14 athlete Nick Miller contributed to the team's success with strong runs in the Open age group. Nick's exceptional talent was recognised by his selection for Victoria in the Australian Championships.

Silver medals for the Open team in the All Schools' Road Relays and bronze medals in the Cross Country Championships and Cross Country Relays capped off an outstanding season for our athletes.
