Scotch College: Great Scot: Hockey Club - 75 years old

Hockey Club - 75 years old

1998 marks the 75th year since the Club first played in 1924. Past members were catered for at a reunion dinner organised by John McArthur and held at Riversdale Golf Club on Friday 28 August.

Over 70 members and partners attended an enjoyable evening. Some of the notable guests included Eddie Cohen and L D 'Dinny' Kemp, both members of the 1935 Premiership side, and Graeme Seccombe who commenced playing in 1936.

Eddie was also well known as a top sprinter, and Dinny and Graeme had long and illustrious hockey careers, both gaining Victorian selection.

Also in attendance at the dinner was Rod Watters, a player from the early 60s, who flew in from Paris where he is now residing.

John McArthur chaired the dinner with aplomb and Dinny Kemp, Robin Hodder and Bill Hutchinson gave some of the highlights of their times. Bruce McClean, on behalf of the members, proposed the Toast to the Club and Tony Melville responded.

On the field, for the first time ever, we had five teams playing in grand finals - unfortunately without one premiership - but it was a great effort for all concerned to get to the grand finals and earn promotion to higher grades for '99.

The new ground and clubhouse are now fully functional - a far cry from the many years at Fairview Park.

Another highlight was the selection of Charles Tulloch ('97) and John Feddersen (Yr 11) in the Victorian U18 side. Ross Blair-Holt was elected a Life Member for long term service to the club.

The 75 Year History prepared by Bruce McClean is almost complete and will be available prior to Christmas. New members are always welcome whether current or ex-hockey players.
