Convenor Peter Wade recently announced that Max Walker had agreed to be the guest speaker at the 1999 Annual Dinner, which will be held on Friday May 28, at the Melbourne Entertainment Centre.
He commented, in making his announcement that, 'In order to
ensure that we continue to provide the best possible evening for Old Boys, the Dinner Committee has this year explored a number of alternative venues.
Having done so we arrived at the unanimous conclusion that the Dinner should continue at the Entertainment Centre.
The options open to us were either to restrict attendance to a much reduced number or, in order to lower costs, cut back on what was on offer at the Dinner. We decided neither of these choices was appropriate.
The Melbourne Entertainment Centre provides us with much greater flexibility in terms of numbers; it is a particularly easy location to access from all corners of Melbourne; and, after two years, the staff appreciate the way we want the function to run.
There have been numerous Old Boys expressing the view that, at $80 per ticket, the 1998 Annual Dinner was too expensive.
Whilst this price may be regarded as being at the upper end of an appropriate range we would like to again stress that the Dinner is not run as a money making exercise.
The Annual Dinner is regarded as, and always will be, an evening at which all Old Boys gather to share memories; it is operated strictly as a break-even exercise.
I have recently had lengthy discussions with the management of the Entertainment Centre, to discuss costs of the evening, and we are confident that all necessary planning has been undertaken to maintain the high quality of food and service, to which our members have become accustomed.
Accordingly, although we have not yet completed our budgeting, we are hopeful of holding the cost at a level similar to that of 1998.
Full details of the 1999 Dinner will be published in the March edition of Great Scot. We look forward to your attendance in May.'
