A great AustralianSir Ian Munro McLennan ('27) died on 25 October 1998. He came to Scotch in 1925 and in his final year was a Probationer, House Captain of McMeckan House and equal Dux of the School. He matriculated with First Class Honours in algebra, trigonometry, mechanics and physics, with exhibitions in trigonometry and mechanics. He was awarded a Scholarship to Ormond College and graduated as a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. After joining BHP he moved strongly through the company ranks to become General Manager in 1950 and then Chairman and Director of Administration from 1971 to 1977. He had a continuing and abiding interest in his old school and the Old Scotch Collegians' Association. Between 1956 and 1967 he was a most active member of the School Council and in 1961 he was elected President of OSCA. His corporate life also included holding the position of Chairman of ANZ Bank and of Elders IXL. Sir Ian's contributions to public life are well documented and his benefaction to the school will never be forgotten. It was with great pride that the Principal announced in December 1996 that Sir Ian had agreed to endow Scotch College's first academic chair to be known as 'the Sir Ian McLennan Chair of Design and Technology'. He is survived by his sons Peter and John, and his daughter Louise. He will always be remembered as a truly great Australian.
