Cadet Tattoo beats the rainSharpest and best yetAfter 48 hours of rain and drizzle, the weather miraculously cleared at about 8pm ready for the preliminary Band displays. The Military Band and Pipe Bands performed brilliantly. The spectacle included well rehearsed drill demonstrations and musical pieces. The audience was not disappointed. After posting the sentries along with the Junior School Drum Corps, the unit was ready to parade. The Guard made it's way down from a beautifully floodlit Chapel and prepared for the unit to march onto the parade ground. Under the command of the RSM WO 1 Simon Tanner, the unit marched onto the main oval in near perfect formation, exhibiting very good precision drill. The display was visually outstanding and was well accepted by the audience. After handing over to the 2IC, WO Justin Wimpole, and then to Parade Commander Unit CUO Paul Greening, the dignitaries arrived. The unit O.C., Principal, Dr. F. G. Donaldson and Recruiting Officer, Brigadier N. R. Turner. RFD, ADC, inspected the Guard and Bands. Brigadier Turner addressed the parade and reminded the members of the unit of Scotch College's distinguished history, heritage and of the leadership opportunities in life. He finally congratulated the members of the unit in their presentation. The Guard performed a Retreat Ceremony, which included the Military Band playing the Retreat Hymn and the bugler playing the Last Post. It was a solemn and memorable part of the Tattoo.
The Tattoo represented an enormous amount of work, including rehearsals which, for the first time, started in term one. The RSM, Unit CUO, senior CUO's of the unit and the school Captain, Matthew Spargo should take much of the credit for its success. Lt Norm Bain, parade director, stepped in towards the end of term 3, bringing the standard of the Tattoo up to an outstanding level in every respect. We were honoured to have had Brigadier Turner (Assistant Commander Cadets - Australian Army) as Reviewing Officer. In addition, 24 distinguished Old Scotch Collegian ex-servicemen were special guests, and enjoyed the parade from directly behind the dais. Thanks to all officers of Cadets and all members of the Unit. Special thanks must go to Lt Hunter McWhinney for his commentary, Jason Bain and his engineers for organising many of the support services and to Lt Norm Bain with enormous military experience and tireless input to produce a parade of such high calibre. The 1998 Tattoo could be recorded as being the unit's sharpest, best choreographed and directed parade, to date. My heartiest congratulations go to all those involved.
Mr P.A. Glover
