The announcement that Mark Simpson had won the H.I. Cohen Trophy for 2000-2001 was the culmination of a fine season for our Captain of cricket and it culminated the finish of his A.P.S. cricketing career.
The 'trophy" is a beautifully bound book in which the winner signs his name; recording the winners since 1920, it is highly valued by our cricketers. The H.I. Cohen Trophy winner is calculated by a system that gives points for achievement in all aspects of the game.
The last seven years have produced just four winners: Simon Dart twice in 1995 and 1996; Tim Downing twice in 1997 and 1998, Will Elliot in 1999 and now Mark Simpson twice in 2000 and 2001.
In the last season Simon Dart represented Victoria in both the Pura Cup and the one-day game; Tim Downing represented Melbourne in the District and grand final and, although still at school, Mark played some games with the Richmond District team, was selected also to represent Australia in the U19 one-day side.
Last year Mark captained the Victorian U17 side and was also nominally an Australian U17 representative.
Mark has been extraordinarily consistent in his three seasons of A.P.S. cricket scoring 876 runs at an average of over 35 and taking 71 wickets at 12.08 in his twenty six games. He scored his only A.P.S. century this season - 141 against Wesley.
I am sure we will be following his progress at higher levels of the game in the not too distant future. Good luck Mark.
