August 3 will be an important day, not only because of the traditional Scotch College/Melbourne Grammar School match for the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, but also because it provides an opportunity for an event which will be significant in Melbourne's commemoration of the Centenary of Federation. It also contributes to the 150th Anniversary celebrations of Scotch College's foundation in 1851.
Thanks to the most extensive and generous support of past footballers of Scotch and Melbourne Grammar, and the parents and friends of both Schools, a special Football Sculpture has been commissioned as a Centenary of Federation Gift to the people of Victoria.
The Sculpture will be of bronze, and will stand 2.7 metres in height. Eminent Sculptor, Mr Louis Laumen, has created a significant work which will mark the birthplace or 'first footprint' of our great game of Australian Rules Football.
The Sculpture will commemorate the first recorded game of Australian Rules Football, which was played between Scotch and Grammar on Saturday 7 August 1858.
Prominently sited near the Gallery of Sport, the Sculpture will become a key part of the historic presentation walks carried out by the MCC guides for international, interstate, intrastate and local visitors. There is no doubt that the Sculpture will become a celebrated element of Victoria's sporting history.
An invitation to attend the pre-match luncheon at the Hilton Hotel on this day will be sent to parents of current senior teams of both schools, parents of selected players from the Junior School, donors to the Sculpture Appeal, and team members from earlier school teams, Club 150 members and other involved parents, friends of the School.
We expect a sell-out of over four hundred and eighty people attending, and as numbers are limited, early booking is essential. Priority bookings will only be given to parents of players and donor captains for the Sculpture Appeal.
All sections of the School Community are warmly invited to attend the Cordner-Eggleston Match at the MCG which will commence at 2.20 pm and the important unveiling of the Sculpture outside the Gallery of Sport at 5.30 pm.
The AFL match between Richmond and Collingwood will begin at 7.40 pm. Anyone leaving the ground to witness the unveiling must obtain a Pass Out if they wish to re-enter to see the AFL match.
