Encouraging start by footballers

Determined to stake a claim on a finals berth this year the Old Scotch Football Club made an excellent start to its season with three straight victories.

A first-up win against reigning premiers Old Xaverians was a great morale booster and came at the end of a challenging week for the club.

Senior coach Brendan Mason relinquished his role due to an increased workload and fortunately for the club, a superb replacement was on hand to fill the gap. Assistant coach Andrew Smith a club veteran of two hundred and ninety-nine games agreed to assume the senior coaching role, while Brendan became Chairman of the Match Committee.

'It reflected well on our club structure and the personnel available to us', joint club President Geoff Speed commented. 'All teams in the club have tasted success and we believe that the club is in for a good year', his joint President Tim Shearer added.

Of particular significance to the club has been its policy of developing its Under 23 talent through its 3rd XVIII formerly known with affection as 'The Warriors'. The club is endeavoring to keep players in the game after they finish Under 19s football. This team has notched up some significant victories as have the Under 19s and the new Under 17 team the Eastern Cardinals.

'The club is acutely aware of the challenges to Australian football as our pre-eminent winter sport and we want to grow the club as a strong A Section force in the VAFA', Tim explained.

Off the field there have been several successful functions including a successful 'Black and White Prohibition Night' and a well attended pre-match luncheon featuring David Parkin during May.
