This year the OSCA Golf Day was held at the Commonwealth Golf Club which lived up to its reputation as one of Melbourne's finest sand belt courses.
Once again we had a perfect Melbourne autumn day on which to contest seven competition events. Unfortunately, for the last two years we have had to drop the 'Under 25' event, due to lack of entries in that category. Perhaps this will be a reminder to some of the younger Old Boys to support the OSCA Golf Day, so that we can reintroduce this event.
Matthew Spargo ('98) was by far the outstanding player in the field, winning the 'Individual Handicap' event with a magnificent score of plus five, playing off a handicap of ten. It looks like Matt will be on a single figure handicap from now on.
Matt, partnered by Derek Styles ('93), was also successful in the 'Four Ball Best Ball Handicap' event, the pair having the excellent score of plus nine. To complete an outstanding day, Matt also won the trophy for the 'Longest Drive' which was not only of prodigious length but also plumb in the middle of the fairway.
John Evans ('60), playing in the OSCA Golf Day for the first time, was successful in winning the 'Individual Scratch' event with a score of minus four.
The 'Fifty Years On' event was won by Marten Bedford ('47) with the very creditable score of square. Marten will now be able to proudly wear his trophy - a 'Fifty Years On' tie. 'Nearest the Pin' was won by Ian Hickey with a fine shot to the ninth green that no one else could match.
We had hoped to have Fred Dawborn ('35), now the longest participating player in the OSCA Golf Day, present the trophies as a mark of respect for the wonderful support he has given the day over many years. Unfortunately, Fred suffered an injury which prevented him completing his round and he had to make a hurried dash to his physiotherapist. The Principal, Dr Donaldson, was happy to step into the breach and present the trophies, for which we thank him.
Thanks also go to Leigh Dawborn ('65) and David Joubert ('47) for their help in making the day a great success.
Next year the OSCA Golf Day will be held at Kew Golf Club on Monday, 6 May. The day is now open to all members of the Scotch Family so any fathers of boys at school, together with any Old Boys who feel they may not be on the mailing list, please contact the OSCA Office, ph 9810 4302 to be put on the list.
