Well rowed Scotch!

For Wil Jelbart ('98), Rob Douglas ('93) and Cameron McKenzie McHarg ('98) the highlight of the Australian Rowing Championships was undoubtedly the exciting win by the Victorian crew in the King's Cup Event for eights - the blue ribbon event of Australian rowing.

Kings Cup Winning Crew - Victoria 2001

The win capped off a great day for the Jelbart family. Max ('73) and Barb Jelbart were on hand to see each of their three sons on the presentation dais. Youngest son, Tim, stroked the Scotch Year 10 VIII to a win at the Head of the River and to a bronze medal in the Champion Under 16 Schoolboy VIII event at Lake Wivenhoe. Second son, George (2000) was in the winning Victorian Youth VIII, coached by Scotch staff member, Andy Muller. Wil Jelbart rowed in the bow seat of the Victorian King's Cup crew.

Douglas, McHarg and McKenzie from 2001 Kings Cup Wil was joined in the eight by Cam McKenzie McHarg with whom he rowed in the winning 1998 Head of the River crew. Cam was drafted to the Western Bulldogs in the AFL after he left school and also had a season with Coburg. Cam started rowing again with the Melbourne University Boat Club and has quickly established himself as one of Australia's leading young oarsmen.

The win was Rob Douglas' second King's Cup success, having been part of the winning crew on the Olympic course at Penrith Lakes last year. Rob rowed in the winning Head of the River crew in 1992 and was Captain of Rowing in 1993. His sister, Georgina, represented Australia at the Sydney Olympics in the Single Sculls. Rob's father, David ('65) is one of Australia's outstanding oarsmen having won a silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games. It is great to see Rob enhancing the Douglas rowing tradition.

National Selection

Following the national titles both Cam McKenzie McHarg and Rob Douglas were involved in the national selection trials. Following these they have both been selected in the Australian VIII to compete at the Royal Henely Regatta in London in July and the World Rowing Championships at Lucerne in Switzerland in August.

Congratulations to Cam and Rob on their Australian selection and we look forward to hearing of their progress in international competition.
