The first of the 2001 season of Monthly Luncheons began with a powerful presentation at the Australian Club by well-known Financial Commentator,
James Dunn. As a regular commentator on radio and editor and columnist in the printed media he was well versed in the financial matters of the day.
Pointing out that Australia was but 2% of the world's stock markets, it inevitably was to be effected by international events and movements. With the increased publicity and involvement of people in the Share Market, a greater understanding of the risk and volatility is taking place among investors. He outlined the examples of the enormous success some entrepreneurs had from a small beginning with venture capital. The value of investing in shares now being understood as a positive factor in building a financial future.
His assessment of the Australian economy, its present status and its likely progression, was very relevant at a time of great volatility.
The economy has so drastically altered that we now have Tourism and Education bringing in greater income than the traditional primary industry exports of previous times. There is no doubt that earnings drive both the health of the economy and share prices and the reforms of recent times have given greater stability earning capacity.
His optimism of a 'soft landing' was followed by a few suggestions of shares which may have prospects beyond the average market.
It was, in all, a very informative assessment of the financial outlook for Australia and our prospects in the challenges and changes ahead.
