Let's Get our Honour Boards Right!

In the decade following each of World War I and World War II, considerable work was done by dedicated Old Boys compiling lists of the fallen. It was almost inevitable that mistakes would be made, often through no fault of these researchers: for instance some Old Boys may have enlisted in the services of the army of another country.

Such research covering the Boer War at the turn of the 19th century was even more difficult because it was before Federation and units were raised and supported through individual towns and cities. Thanks to some incredible work by an Old Boy, the indefatigable Geoff Paton ('57), we have a number of additions to make to our Boer War Honour Roll and we would like to amend similarly our records of those lost in World War I and World War II.

I have reason to believe that there may be Old Boys missing from our World War II list of fallen in particular.

Recently I received a letter from an Old Boy explaining that his uncle was missing from the list. He had been declared missing in action, presumed dead while in action as a pilot over New Britain. It is clearly the case that many parents and grandparents of servicemen in such situations clung to every possible hope of survival, even long after all reasonable hope had passed and particularly in the Pacific theatre where the density of the jungle and poor communications gave succour to such hopes.

If you know of any Old Boy whose name is missing from our Honour Rolls in the Memorial Hall for World War I for whatever reason, would you please write giving as many details as you can to:

Dick Briggs: The Archivist,
Scotch College, Morrison Street,
Hawthorn, Vic, 3122.

Please remember that there will be many families who are no longer in touch with the School whose sons or brothers should be included in our lists and we share a responsibility to make it right. Please assume that the School has no knowledge of any missing names. The School will keep this file open for two years before deciding how best to include the names of such Old Boys in our memorials in the Memorial Hall.

In the September issue of Great Scot we will publish the current Honour Roll for World War II and invite your comments and any amendments.

Mr Dick Briggs, Archivist
