Scotch College

Month:

Most skiers and snow-boarders might have thought the 2001 snow season was a disappointing one, starting late and with few significant snowfalls. However, if you were lucky you may have enjoyed some really nice skiing during the few weeks when the snow cover was good at the end of August and beginning of September. Modern snow making systems ensured that the main resorts had some skiing available throughout the main part of the season, and Thredbo (and the other NSW resorts accessible by the ski tube from Thredbo) fared better than the Victorian mountains.

Koomerang members and their guests enjoy access to Australian resorts unmatched by any other club. Our facilities in four locations at Mount Buller, Falls Creek, Thredbo and Mount Hotham offer comfortable, affordable accommodation. The lodges are well utilised, and most members are able to get accommodation on their preferred dates.

The mountains are also popular in summer, and many members arrange weekends away with their family and friends, or join in the activities programmed at all resorts nowadays. Thredbo in particular has a strong program of music festivals and other events throughout the summer.

Koomerang competes each year in the inter-club races held at Mount Buller on a Saturday in July and challenges arch-rival club Alkira in the Koomerang-Alkira Cup on the Sunday. Perhaps more importantly, the weekend includes the traditional Koomerang-Alkira pre-race dinner. Despite the dinner and associated revelries, all competitors fronted for the Cup in 2001 but unfortunately Alkira were the 2001 victors.

In Melbourne the club gets together at regular social functions. In 2001 we enjoyed a terrific night at Yak bar in the city early in the year and took the opportunity to greet old friends and meet other members. Shortly before Christmas the club members Guy and Jackie Besley hosted a most enjoyable barbecue at their house in Portsea.

Koomerang supports the Scotch College Ski Club and works with staff member Tom Fisher who continued his stewardship of the Club in 2001 with the assistance of Katrina Stalker. Disappointingly the annual July holidays camps held at the Koomerang Falls Creek flats and Mount Hotham (proposed as normal for accommodation at Dinner Plain) were cancelled due to lack of snow. However, the annual beginners' camp was successfully held at Koomerang Mount Buller and many competitors in the annual inter-school racing and their families also utilised Mount Buller.
