On a typically glorious Melbourne Autumn day, forty-four enthusiastic Old Scotch Collegians gathered at Kew Golf Club to do battle for the six concurrent events which have been the format for the Old Scotch Collegians Golf Day for many years.
The dappled light of the brilliant sunshine coming through the trees and the bellbirds singing their hearts out, provided a perfect setting for a wonderful day of golf, which was illustrated by the excellent scores which were turned in.
Again it is with regret that I have to report that we had no entries for the Under 25 event which is most disappointing. Hopefully some of the recent school leavers can be encouraged to come and enjoy the OSCA Golf Day, because apart from enjoying a game of golf on some of Melbourne's top courses, it is a great opportunity to get together with some of your old mates.
The 'Individual Handicap' event was won in convincing style by Chris Bailey ('64) with a score of plus four. Chris has been a great supporter of the Golf Day for many years, making a special trip from his home in Penola (SA), to participate in the day. Well done Chris.
Ric Wines ('60), was again the winner of the 'individual scratch' event with an excellent score of square. Rick has a wonderful record in this event and by now must have won it a record number of times.
The 'Four Ball Best Ball Handicap' event was won by Ian Picken ('65), and Graeme Weber ('64), with an incredible score of plus thirteen. Obviously the Handicappers at their respective clubs will be informed of 'their day out'.
The writer ('44), was fortunate enough to win the 'Fifty Years On' event on a count back from good friend David Joubert ('47), (your turn next year David).
Peter Creswell ('84), hit a magnificent shot to win the 'longest drive', with a 'drive' that was estimated to be 320 metres; they don't come much better than that.
Playing in the last four of the day, Mike Fitchett ('45), won the 'nearest the pin' competition, to add another item to what one would imagine, his not inconsiderable trophy cabinet. Mike has been a great contributor to Victorian and Australian Golf over the years.
Again the day could not have been run so smoothly without the valued assistance of Leigh Dawborn ('65), and David Joubert ('47), who had the onerous task of checking all the score cards and doing the numbers for the Ball Jackpot. Grateful thanks to them both
Long Island Country Club is next year's venue.
The venue for next year's Golf Day is the Long Island Country Club, Frankston, on Friday 2nd May 2003.
We are most anxious to increase the number of Old Boys participating, so if you are not on the mailing list for an entry form, please contact the OSCA Office, Ph. (03) 9810 4302 and give them your details. Entry forms will be mailed out mid April 2003.
