In contrast to the wet conditions last year, the sun was shining brightly for the Anzac Day march to the Shrine. The Military Band stepped off outside St Paul's Cathedral, enthusiastic and keen to show respect for those who had gone before. Resplendent in their Scarlets and white helmets they created a strong presence, the bearing and dressing being particularly impressive this year. The new skins on the Bass Drum also made it clear who we were with the Scotch emblem boldly placed in the centre.
Along the route they played Semper Fidelis and a new composition by our Musical Director, Mr Roger Schmidli, entitled "Monash Drive". This skilfully written march showed the band at its best, playing to its strengths.
There was a slightly different format at the end of the march, providing a chance for the band to undertake a countermarch before continuing to play at the Shrine until the next band came. Under the confident direction of Drum Major SSGT Tom Iansek the well-rehearsed drill ran very smoothly.
The morning was a great success, the exhausted bandsmen feeling a special sense of pride and pleasure for a job well done.
