Scotch College

Cricket team wins APS Premiership

With seven wins including two outright victories and three draws the Scotch College 1st XI won Scotch's first APS cricket premiership since 1996. Winning our first three one-day matches convincingly the boys started the 'two-dayers' with an outright against Geelong Grammar. With more wins and a couple of close draws the season came to a climax in our final match of the season against Caulfield Grammar. Scotch needed 106 runs off 16 overs to grab an outright result. With 15 balls to spare the target was reached capping off an undefeated season.

1st Eleven Cricket Team: 2002-03

Patrick McKenna - 1st XI Captain

1st Eleven Cricket Team: 2002-03 (written after our last game)

The game of cricket is an intriguing one
With wickets and runs it can be quite fun
The results of the matches are always in doubt
The season is worse for parents than the drought

2002-03 we did eagerly await
Will a Premiership be ours or some other fate?
When the coaching staff fronted up as a double act
Peckers and Murph had made a bit of a pact

John keenly asked Gary "Do you need a hand mate?"
"It'd be great to have you on board - we've got a side that I rate"
So the duo was set for a brand new season
Although what was to ensue defies rhyme and reason

With Mr Hess junior at the helm of the team
The pre Christmas games were a cricketer's dream
Three wins from three was a fantastic start
Murph and Peckers reckon they'll never be apart

The new year brought further early success
The positive results were there in excess
Then just when it looked like a Premiership win
The results went astray and looked a bit thin

So while we don't know yet who'll win the comp
We do know that Scotch has had a romp
To be undefeated is a terrific feat
So who's this team that gave us parents this treat?

What better mention than to work the order of bats
Although I don't think I'll be accurate with the stats
Barts or James-O is one of the schools best
And this season he certainly enjoyed a run fest

An undefeated century v Wesley saved the day
while against Geelong College for a draw he paved the way
Paddy the skipper is a bit of an all rounder
Particularly with the ball he's a real bounder

He rips through tailenders for cheap wickets
And for that he gives himself big tickets
Paddy's done a great job from the front
To keep the lads right in the hunt

About Richie, well what can we say
He's got so much passion and loves to play
A great knock v St Kev's was a match winner
Try to relax more Rich, and enjoy your dinner

Then to No.4 we come to the Hammer
He scored a century against Melbourne Grammar
With another 90 and 80, he gives it a good bunt
Though I suspect his future may lie in the punt.

The "kid wonder" is next a young bloke meek and mild
Nick Smith is his name, though Murph claims him his own child
Handy with both bat and ball in stature
He has real potential and a fantastic future

Dylan's a match saver he's done it so often in the past
You wouldn't pick it would you, with his pants at halfmast
This 50 plus innings have been really superb
Well done, mate, thank you, although your hair needs a refurb

Jewey's a great team man, handy with the ball
And today with the bat did answer the call
Dunny's been there with memorable five-for v Brighton
Handy with the bat, but his left hand can really frighten

Suther impressed early with three-for v Carey
And he's match drawing bat versus Xavs was quite scary
The real bowling demon has been the horse
He opens the bowling and has taken most wickets of course

Young Cam is the man behind the stumps all day
He spends all his time right in the fray
And what a great knock against the quicks
When he pulled out all his batting techniques

Let's not forget the two other members
Scotty Haines made a great effort before December
And Bretter's replacement to keep the scores
Thanks Tom Bennetts for getting all those fours

And what about today, for all us who observed it
The champion team absolutely deserved it
The declaration worked, the weather stayed fine
To enable Scotch College to get over the line

So thanks boys and coaches for a great year
We'll all leave the team behind with memories dear
It's a relief to see the nerves of cricket over
Now bring on the odd ball game with the Ruck Rover.

ANON.
