1st VIII Gallant Runners Up

Denise Armstrong

Inset: Denise Armstrong's reaction sums up the tight finish.

The first VIII came oh so close to winning this year's Head of the River at Nagambie Lakes. Having led for the first 1,700 metres, they were overtaken by a fast finishing Geelong College crew in the final 250 metres and they finished in second place with Caulfield Grammar back in third place. The crew of Rob Buchanan (bow), Lachlan Armstrong (2), George Lilley (3), Charles Emmett (4), Matthew Ramage (5), Nick Mitchell (7), Chris Riddell (7), Byron Saunders (stroke) and Ed Kitchen (cox), jointly coached by Drew Ginn and Andy Muller, went into the event seeded in second position. However, Geelong Grammar and Caulfield Grammar were favourites with Scotch and Geelong College rated next. The heats saw wins to Melbourne Grammar and Caulfield Grammar. Scotch was second to Caulfield and Geelong College third in the faster of the heats. In the final, the Scotch crew went out hard and maintained a small margin on Geelong College through the 1,000 metre and 1,500 metre marks with Caulfield back in third place. However, a sustained sprint from Geelong College saw them take the lead with about 300 metres to go and they went on to win by about half a length with Caulfield in third place, Carey fourth, Geelong Grammar fifth and Melbourne Grammar sixth. Congratulations go to the crew and the coaches on the fine manner in which they "laid it all on the line" in attempting to win the Head of the River.

2nd VIII

Back to Back Wins for the 2nd VIII

The 2nd VIII won at the Head of the River for the second successive time. The crew had a season interrupted by illness and injury but went into the regatta with high hopes of another success. In their heat, they came from behind to win by 0.44 secs from Wesley College. A change of tactics saw the crew take an early lead in the final and they held the lead throughout to win by 2 seconds from Wesley with Carey in third place. Congratulations on their fine win to the crew of Tim Jelbart (bow), Tom Nickson (2), Richard Shanasy (3), Simon Jackson (4), Chris Simmons (5), Ed Cruickshank (6), Richard McDonald (7), Sandy Machin (stroke) and James Davison (cox), coached by Simon Morrison ('86).

Scotch Most Successful School at the Regatta

Scotch was once again the most successful School at the regatta. The School entered crews in 13 events and finished with 9 first placings and 4 second placings. The results are a credit to all the crews and coaches and our congratulations go to TIC Rowing, Mr Tom Bowen, and our Director of Coaching, Mr Steve Whittington.
