Nearing the halfway stage of the A grade VAFA season the Old Scotch Football Club finds itself strategically positioned towards the lower end of the main pack fighting hard to stay in touch with run away reigning premiers St Bernard's, who have once again jumped swiftly out of the blocks.
Captain Steve Hume ('91) leads the players off the ground at half time against Marcellin
The club is currently positioned 7th having dropped four out of its past five matches, which is extremely disappointing after avenging last year's preliminary final loss to Old Xavierans in round two. However, the close nature of amateur football sees Scotch only two games off second position with finals still a real possibility. Captain Steve Hume ('91) continues to set a high standard, with the seniors searching for a more even contribution from all members with the aim of stringing together four quarters of consistent football on a weekly basis.
The reserves appear to have turned the corner with coach Serge D'Angelo masterfully constructing their maiden victory against arch rivals Old Melburnians in round 6. The team is showing a lot of promise and enthusiasm and looks set for a successful second half of the season. The highlight of the year to date came in round 2 when Nick Hooper ('86) became the first player in Scotch's history to reach 300 games. Congratulations Hoops and, by the way, 'how many good ones?!'.
The under 19s have shown they can match it with the best of them and currently rest in 3rd place. Skipper Lachie Thompson ('01) is having a stellar season and leading the boys into a strong position in which to attack the finals.
Congratulation must go out to Luke Hawkins ('96) and Matt Dennis who were selected in the Victorian VAFA team that played Western Australia's WAAFA side over the Queen's birthday weekend at Subiaco Oval. Further congratulations to Luke being adjudged best a field and the recipient of the Neil Judge medal.
Andrew Crow ('95) handballs to Matthew Dennis
Now to off the field news and the OSFC saw the successful launch of the 100 games club at the luncheon held prior to the Marcellin game on the 10th of May. Many thanks must go to club legend Stuart Gibbs who did a fantastic job hosting the event. Also the players' River Cruise was a fun and entertaining night held on the Yarra river and whispers have started circulating about a possible players' review to be held some time in August. So be sure to check the club's website www.oldscotchfc.com.au for ongoing and up to date news on club events.
