Water Polo - Australian Youth Team

After the National U/17 Water Polo Championships last October, two Scotch boys were named in the 20-man training squad for the Australian youth team, which is scheduled to play against every major water polo nation in a series of international tournaments this June and July, against Spain, Hungary, Russia, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Slovakia, Holland, Canada and the USA.

After three gruelling training camps, the 20 strong squad was reduced to a team of 13, with both Scotch boys selected to represent Australia.

Jason Knights is in the team for the second year. Currently in Year 12, Jason has had to rationalise his training this year in order to focus his attention on his studies. Nevertheless, the potency of his left-handed shot, along with his experience, guaranteed his selection.

John Thompson, son of Teacher-in-Charge of Water Polo Geoff Thompson, is the youngest member of the team, having only just turned 16. While physically the smallest player in the touring party, his astute reading of a game and his ability to create opportunities, more than compensates for his lack of stature.

To have two players in the 20 man squad was a matter for some pride; have two members from one school in a 13-man national team, is a remarkable achievement.
