Woolami Beach Surf rowers

Woolami Beach Surf Life Saving Club

Do you like adrenaline? Then like many Scotchies, surfboat rowing may be for you. The Woolamai Beach Surf LifeSaving Club is currently recruiting 'boaties'.

The last group of successful young men came from Scotch College '95. Andrew Crow, James Coveney, Cameron Ward and Charles Campbell-Jones won a Victorian title in only their second season, as well as winning a silver medal in their first year. Woolamai has won almost 20 Victorian and 2 Australian titles and numerous minor placings and final appearances.

The club has always had a strong association with Scotch; many old Scotch boys are presently members.

Ideally you will be 16 - 24 years of age, physically fit and looking for a challenging, exciting sport. Rowing experience would be a definite advantage, especially those riverboat rowers looking for something different and more exciting. New equipment and experienced Sweeps and Coaches are available; all we need are some guys & girls that know how to pull on an oar. Woolamai has a brand new $1.5 million dollar clubhouse and is well situated on Phillip Island. All competitors must gain their Surf Bronze, which is fantastic for learning how to negotiate the surf.

The carnivals are conducted at various beaches along the Victorian coastline during the months of December to March culminating in the Victorian titles in mid March and the Australian titles presently held on the Gold Coast. Several forms of surfboat competition are conducted in addition to the standard surf carnivals with the elite crews from each State competing in events like the Kellogg Nutri Grain series at various beaches around Australia. Crews are Melbourne based and train on the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay. Woolamai will hold a flat water sprint carnival on Albert Park Lake on Sunday the 27 October; any interested parties are welcome to come along.

If anyone is interested in joining Woolamai and in particular becoming a boatie then contact John Thomson 0419 032 597 or John Sill 0418 310 598.
