Year 8 art class model their masks for the play,
Year 8 Art students recently created a no less than 26 full head masks of various animals to assist the Drama Department with the production of the play, The Jungle Book. The masks were constructed from a wire base then covered with aluminium wire mesh and plaster bandage, then painted. Fake fur was cut and added to give the final effect to each animal. It was a demanding project and the boys created some fantastic props with their efforts. |
On Wednesday 18 July, the Year 11 Studio Art students set off on a day excursion around the inner city area. After looking at a contemporary sculpture exhibition at Australian Art Resources Gallery in City Road, the group visited the Littlewood and Hart, Fine Art Gallery, 91 Queensbridge Street, Southbank. The owners of the Gallery Robert and Kathy Littlewood, who have two sons in Junior School, were on hand to speak with the boys. Mr Littlewood explained the nature of works on paper, and the variety of printing techniques being employed. The Gallery has a huge studio at the rear which is used to print limited editions of prints and etchings. The boys were able to see the studio technician, printing from one of the plates created by a former Head of Art, Mr John Shirlow, who taught at Scotch in the late 1920s.
The next stop was a visit to Emery Vincent Design in South Melbourne, where the boys were shown the design studio and given an explanation about the distinctive approach to graphic and product design, which has made this Company a leader in the field.
After lunch the group were privileged to be able to visit Swish Group in Collins Street, and were shown through the multimedia studios by producer Tim Spicer. The boys were fascinated to hear about the way in which rock bands make video clips, and were able to see one being edited, ready for release. The final visit for the day was to the Ian Potter Gallery in Federation Square, where they looked at the building and its collection.
