Donald Ewan Christopher ('34) was born in Brisbane in 1917 and was the only son of John Clifton Christopher ('03). He spent his early years in Camperdown and finished his education at Scotch followed by Melbourne University graduating in 1941 with Honours BDSc LDS, and Don recalled those years "as being one of the happiest periods of my life".

Donald Ewan Christopher

Don served five years in the Army in the Northern Territory and New Guinea and, on demobilisation, accepted the challenge of establishing a dental practice in Deniliquin NSW where he practised for the next 18 years. His community involvement was wide and varied over this time but he was always able to find time for fishing.

1964 saw the family relocate to Kooyong and many of his patients travelled the distance for his care and friendship. He was invited to become a member of Delta Sigma Delta (dental group), later becoming President and through his continued Rotary association was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow medal for his services to the community. Don very keenly followed the rowing and rugby talents of his sons Jon ('72) and Peter ('72) and the same for his grandsons Ben Sayer ('94) and Tim Sayer ('96).

Don retired to Mt. Eliza and the family became his central concern. A member of the Glen Chapter for 15 years, but ill health precluded him from many activities although he never lost his sense of fun and good humour. Don died on 28 September 2002.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia, four children and four grandchildren.

Geoffrey Alfred Duncan ('47), who was a life member of OSCA, passed away on 18 June 2003.

When at Scotch College he was a member of the inaugural Pipe Band. He lived in Malvern, Mt Waverley and East Burwood prior to settling in Mooroopna. He was a Purchasing Manager.

The Scotch College community was saddened to learn of the untimely death of Fiona Werner, daughter of Don Werner ('61) and sister of Colin Werner ('88).

Many in the Scotch rowing community will remember Fee's exploits on the water as a rower at MLC and later at MUBC where she won an Australian Championship.

Fee's death, after a short illness, has touched all those who knew her and our condolences go to Don, Colin and all the other family members.

Neil Harrison ('35) was one of nature's gentlemen and a cast-iron original. A long-time resident of Glen Iris with a delightful turn of phrase, he was thought by some mischievous admirers to be the model for Barry Humphries' character Sandy Stone. In fact his views were a good deal less wistful and more trenchant. Of two terrifying secretaries at his lifetime employer BHP, he cried, "BAH, they are all MAD!" Of one of many hapless football umpires: "You MUG, Deller!" Of a conspicuously well-dressed female spectator: "Madam, you ARE at the FOOTBALL!"

Neil never married, reserving his passions for music (catholic tastes from classical to jazz, of which he had an encyclopaedic knowledge), travel (his fascinating and hilarious slide nights were legendary), and Hawthorn (a club guernsey adorned his coffin). Of his span of 85 years, much can be captured in shorthand: GCS (Gardiner Central School, of which he was Year 5 Dux), SC (Colin Gilray concluded that Neil had "by his general attitude to school life won the good opinion of his masters. His conduct has at all times been excellent, and he is very dependable"), the RSL (being more interested in saving life than ending it, he enlisted for five years in the Army Medical Corps), the ABC ("There's only ONE station - 3LO!"), the RACV and his MG TD. At Christmas he would motor round with a case full of presents for the whole family, though chivalry was uppermost: "Madam, YOU have the first choice".

He was a treasured friend of schoolmates Jack Asher ('34), Jim McAllester ('36) and Reg Waddell ('34), and the beloved "Uncle Neil" of the McComas family.

Neil would scoff at the grandiose suggestion that the world is a poorer place for his passing, but certainly his world is. From all who loved and cherished this gruff, generous, twinklingly irascible, thoroughly engaging and altogether unforgettable character: cheerio, Neil and COME ON, Hawthorn, DON'T just stand there - DO something!
