‘If we’d had a global positioning system to monitor where our students were placed for their work experience, some fascinating locations would have appeared.’ That’s how Mr Ken Wheat (Head of Upper School) described the school’s successful Year 10 Work Experience Week held at the start of Term 3.
‘Our boys could be found in television studios, theatres, legal firms, hospitals, interstate and overseas businesses and on construction sites, to name just a few,’ he said.
Now in its fourth year, the program enables boys midway through their Year Ten program to experience the world of work and test their interests in particular careers. This year, because of new government regulations, the boys were required in their tutor groups to explore occupational health and safety issues prior to their placement.
Year 10 is the focus for a significant program conducted by the school’s Course and Careers Services department.
‘We see the boys both in small groups and individually and try to help them make the most appropriate subject selections for their VCE courses and subsequent careers,’ Head of Department Dr Robert Smith explained.
The work experience program could not be conducted without the support of employers who provide placement opportunities and give generously of their time. ‘We sincerely appreciate the help given to our young men and are certain that the knowledge, skills and relationships which they acquire from the program will be enormously beneficial in the future,’ Mr Wheat added.
