Scotch shows real depth in water polo

George Sutton

Scotch enjoyed a most successful water polo season, with our teams participating in four of the six premiership games in various grades in late October.

The Open A team won the Victorian schools competition and the Year 7s won their division, with the Year 9s and 10s having to settle for runners-up. The Year 8s were third and the Open Bs were fifth, so all players are to be congratulated for an excellent all-round effort throughout the grades.

Scotch won the Open A premiership six years ago, so we are very pleased that the trophy has now returned to the school. The premiership weekend was very exciting and filled with lots of emotion for all players and their families.

The captains in the year levels have been very rewarding to work with and have certainly led their teams to great success. They are: James Sansom (Year 7), Jonathan Wallace-Smith (Year 8), Tim Melville (Year 9), Alexander Booth (Year 10), Ben Kaye and Nikola Josevski (Open A Co-Captains).

Individual success has also come the way of Matthew Wallace-Smith, who has played in the under 20 state water polo team and also the Australian youth water polo team. Nikola Josevski has also played in the state under 20s team, and Chris Acton is in the state under 16 team. As well, Hamish Murphy and Jack Bull play in the Victorian under 14 team.

On 17 October, the Scotch Aquatics Parents’ Support group organised a most enjoyable end-of-season dinner and presentation night for us, with more than 120 players and families present. Trophies were won by James Sansom (Year 7), Jack Bull (Year 8), Stuart Alexander (Year 9), Alexander Booth (Year 10), Nicholas Welch (Open B) and Ben Kaye (Open A).

The 2004 George Sutton Perpetual Trophy for the most outstanding player across the teams went to Year 8 player Jonathan Wallace-Smith.
