One of the major events of the Family Day athletics program is always the Ewan Macdonald 800m handicap, and this year’s event was certainly no exception. Unfortunately, the handicapper failed dismally, with this year’s winner, Chris Taylor
(’99) chalking up his third win in this event. Chris ran a handy two minutes even on the grass track off a 20-metre starting mark. The contest for second was tight, with Hugh Gundlach (’02) triumphing over Andrew Sim (’01) and Tom Gray (’99). It was also great to see Bruce Wilson back running in the cardinal singlet this year. Bruce is part of the renowned Wilson clan, which has over the years greatly contributed its vast running gene pool to the service of the athletics club. The athletics club competes every Saturday afternoon between October and March at Hagenauer’s Reserve, Elgar Road, Box Hill. The club is particularly interested in recruiting recent Old Boys who may be keen to resume athletics after having finished school. The club also has a number of current schoolboys who compete with us as part of their summer sport. We cater for all levels of fitness and ability in a range of competition grades at the Box Hill venue. For more information, please contact Ross Becroft on 0439 912 468 or Mark Purvis on 0407 526 622. We are particularly interested in anyone wishing to compete in field events (discus, shot put, high and long jumps and pole vault); or indeed anyone who fancies himself as a decathlete.
