Reading between the lines

More than $10,000 worth of items changed during an enormously successful book fair, held in the first week of May.

Held in the Resource Centre, the fair attracted parents and boys in large numbers before and after school for three days. The popularity of the fair showed that reading is very much alive and well in the Junior School

A world of wonder in clay

Junior School Artist in Residence, Kerry Punton has opened up a world of wonder in clay for Junior School boys, with the use of an extruder to produce clay in most unusual shapes.

Mrs Punton, from Northcote Potteries, as been working with Years 3,4,5 and 6 boys in the Art Room during Term 2, with the program sponsored by the Ken Field Memorial Trust.

Boys have been most entranced to watch the long shapes come out of the extruder.

Year 3 boys have used hollow circle and hexagon shapes to make mugs with handles and pencil holders with a range of decorations, and have then glazed their creations.

Year 4 boys have made castles and small houses using the round and square hollow shapes out of the extruder, with textures for the walls and roofs. Year 5 boys have used large coils from the extruder to make tall cylindrical shapes in terracotta clay with interesting decorations and textures.

Year 6 boys have make boxes with lids and decorations using the square shape from the extruder. These decorations have also been glazed, and all models have been fired in the kiln.

RoboClub

Every Wednesday and Thursday night after school the excitement mounts, as Junior School boys make their way into the Year 6 classroom for RoboClub.

Designing, building, creating, collaborating, communicating, valuating, inventing and imagining are just some of the skills these boys are using to solve real life problems within a robotic environment.

Robotics is a highly motivating activity that really engages students, and enables virtually all areas of the curriculum to be incorporated. It's a wonderful way to make connections between subjects and really add meaning to scientific theories.

The sky is the limit when it comes to ideas and the capability of the programming of the robots. The creativity of the boys shines through and some of their creations are mindboggling.
