I go to social services every Thursday afternoon to “Neighbourhood Gardening”. Mrs Lee is the lady who I look after. I help her with various bits of housework, the gardening, and planting. Afterwards we sit down and have a chat over biscuits about anything interesting that’s happened over the past week. I really enjoy my time at her place every week and it has been a wonderfully positive experience for me.

Social Service has opened my eyes to a world beyond my own, a world I would never have experienced. Interacting with the elderly at Hawthorn Terrace gives me and the people I am around the chance to share our stories and to venture into the lives of other people. It provides me with a chance to see how Australia has evolved, and re-live the stories of the past. I don’t only see Thursday afternoons as a service to the people I talk to, I also see it as a service to myself.

Every Tuesday afternoon Tim Wang and I have travelled to Camberwell South Primary School. We participated in many activities including sports, drama and art. We were also given a small insight into what a large amount of administration work goes into an Aftercare program. I would like to thank Scotch and Camberwell South Primary for providing us with the opportunity to participate in such an activity.

Social Service every Thursday at Hedley Sutton in Canterbury is an interesting and rewarding afternoon, which brings a smile to the faces of the elderly.
