The overall aim of the Outdoor/Service Activity Program is to foster self-reliance, initiative, leadership, loyalty, self-discipline, and community awareness, by teaching a variety of skills and providing a range of challenging experiences.
Students are involved each Thursday afternoon in one of the various forms of outdoor or service activity, most of which require attendance at an end of term camp or activity. To make time available for these activities period times are different on Thursday.
A varied Program of sports training on Thursday except for students involved in the Scout troop, Military Band or the Year 8 hike Program.
A student may choose to join the Scout troop in Year 7, which is a three year commitment, and for which there is an annual camp and an annual hike.
1st Hawthorn (Scotch College) Scout Troop
A student may choose to join the Military Band in Year 8, which is a minimum two year commitment.
The Year 8 hike Program involves approximately nine Thursday afternoons with a three day bushwalk.
Scouts continue. A number of boys may join the St. John Ambulance or Bands. Other students do a two term basic training course in cadets which includes a weekend bivouac early in the year and culminates in a camp at the end of Term III. This training is seen as basic to a further one year's outdoor activity in one of the following, starting at the beginning for Term IV.
Boys may continue their Year 9 activity. Boys alternatively may join the Year 10 Outdoor Activities Program.
Year 10 Outdoor Activities Program
At the end of term III in Year 10 some students continue their activity with the remainder taking up Social Service.
In Year 11 students continue their activities for Terms I, II and III. At the end of Term III students may continue in their current activity or accept a position of school leadership or responsibility. These positions become more numerous and extensive in Term I of Year 12.
