Inscription
The inscription on the Cordner-Eggleston Cup
reads:
The Cordner-Eggleston Cup for football is
awarded annually for perpetual competition between
Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College who
first played Australian Rules Football on 7th
August, 1858.
The two respective former school personalities
honoured in the Cordner-Eggleston Cup Trophy are Dr
Don Cordner and the late Mr Michael Eggleston.
Dr Don Cordner
Dr Don Cordner was an outstanding schoolboy
footballer and all-round sportsman at Melbourne
Grammar School. He went on to play 166 games with
the Melbourne Football Club between 1941 and 1950.
He was one of the great ruckmen of that period,
winning the Brownlow Medal in 1946, and was Captain
of Melbourne during their 1948 Premiership year. He
has given outstanding service as a member of
Melbourne Grammar School Council from 1974 until
his retirement in early 1989. During the last four
years he acted in he capacity of Chairman.
Mr Michael Eggleston
The late Mr Michael Eggleston was also an
outstanding schoolboy athlete, cricketer and
footballer, playing in the centre with the 1st
XVIII which won the APS Premiership in 1947. At
Melbourne University he gained Blues for Cricket
and Football. He also played District Cricket for
Collingwood. He was an outstanding footballer for
the Old Scotch Football Club, and in January 1958
joined the staff at Scotch College where he served
the school with great distinction until his
retirement in 1987. He coached the 1st XVIII for
fourteen years from 1965 to 1978. Seven APS
premierships were won by teams under his coaching
and enough Scotch boys of that era went on to join
VFL clubs, to form a team of their own.
