Scotch 1st X1 played Haileybury at Haileybury on Saturday 2nd December. Haileybury won the toss and batted, but were soon in trouble due to some excellent bowling from Daniel Parisi (who finished with 3/48 off 11 overs) and Daniel Forbes. They were very well supported well by Matt Grose (2/27 off 11 overs) and Maurice Clayton (2/43). Haileybury recovered from 6/84, with their amazing depth to finally make 8/205 off their designated 55 overs. In reply, Scotch had a couple of good partnerships between Maurice Clayton and Sam Cruickshanks of 29, and then Sam Cruickshanks and James Bowden of 53, and Sam again with Daniel Forbes with a partnership of 36. Unfortunately, 5 run-outs, some caused by brilliant Haileybury fielding, and some by poor decision making and selfless acts by Scotch batsman, saw us fall short by 18 runs with 9 balls left, all out for 187. Sam Cruickshanks batted through the innings to finish on 96 not out.
It was a tremendous game and Scotch played some great cricket against a star-studded Haileybury line-up. The Scotch team should be proud of their efforts, and despite the loss, should be better for the experience.
Scotch 1st X1 played Carey on Saturday 25th November. They won the toss and batted. After 20 overs they were 2/56, but in the next 20 overs they lost 6/26, and were finally bowled out for 88. Best bowlers statistically for Scotch were Daniel Wolfe with 3/7 off 11 overs, Daniel Parisi with 3/10 off 6 overs, and Maurice Clayton with 2/10 off 7 overs. Matt Grose and Ayrton Eldridge also bowled well. We batted and passed their score in the 13th over, with a 50 run partnership between Sam Cruickshanks and Maurice Clayton setting us up. Clayton ended up with 58 not out.
A much improved performance from the 2nd XI this week with the inclusion of a number of players from the first XI squad. Fielding first a series of dropped chances allowed Caulfield to make 7/202 (Lowden 2/22, Strange 2/32). After a solid start of 41 by Foster and Clarke (26), Ferguson (52), Long (37) and Strange (59) consolidated the innings and helped the team pass the CGS score with 8 overs to spare for the loss of just 4 wickets.
The year 10A cricket team remains undefeated in 2006, after beating Assumption College comfortably. Sent in to bat on a good batting wicket, Scotch amassed a very good score of 3/212 off 45 overs. The score was built on the back of 4 good partnerships, the best being 129 between Eldridge and MacMillan. MacMillan was rewarded with a fine century, finishing with 104 no. A feature of all the partnerships was the smart running between the wickets.
The Assumption bats began quickly attacking the Scotch opening bowlers, but Barbour took an early wicket, before Eldridge and Carrington put the brakes on the run rate. Fielding inside the 30m arc was sharp with McLean, Ryan and Carrington all manufacturing run out chances. Barbour and McLean then made important breakthroughs to remove dangerous Assumption bats, and Eldridge returned to take 2 wickets, narrowly missing a hat trick. Assumption finished with 7/174 off their 45 overs.
No report
After being surprisingly sent in to bat on a brilliant Meares Oval wicket we found ourselves in early trouble at 2/26. A sensible and solid 90 run partnership between Nick Jamieson (40) and Al McMahon (99not out) got us back in the game. Another middle order collapse saw us lose 4/29 and we found ourselves in trouble, but a resistant partnership between Al Reeves (21) and Scott Roberts (18 not out) helped us restore order. Al McMahon batted superbly from go to whoa, and his innings was calculated and intelligent, working the ball along the ground, taking quick singles and, occasionally, flaying the ball to the boundary. The team total of 9/243 was always going to be super competitive.
Assumption lost steady wickets throughout the day and, apart from their opening bat, was pretty much outclassed. Wickets were shared between Al Reeves, Tom Whittle, Geoff Yam, Scott Roberts and Jack Pallazo. Assumption finished with 6/128 after their 45 overs.
The 9Bs enjoyed a good win against Wesley. Scotch 8/208 to 4/105.
We won the toss and batted with Jason Huang and Tom Hackett both retiring after reaching 30, and Oliver Tarrant (17), Angus Smith (18) and James Manton (26) all contributing well. On a small ground we had to bowl and field well which we did. James Manton was particularly accurate with the new ball and our switched on fielders generated two run outs from consecutive balls. While we didn’t take many wickets, all the boys bowled with enthusiasm and did very well to restrict their scoring.
Scotch 5/136 (C. O’Beirne 36 retired, H. Philip 29) Defeated Melbourne Grammar 117 All Out
A solid all round performance which resulted in a good win against a Melbourne Grammar team which had beaten Scotch in their only encounter last season. Scott Wrigley, Harry Philip and Conor O’Beirne set the foundation for the final score of 5/136 off the allocated 30 overs. The Scotch bowlers did a fine job in bowling the correct lines and lengths and pressured the batsmen into making some terrible judgements in their running between wickets. Four run outs and some further close calls were the product of some intelligent bowling backed up by some excellent fielding. Harry Short, Sam Starkins, Conor O’Beirne and Nick Lindsay all bowled well and had Grammar on the back foot from the outset. The leg spin of Rupert Wills saw Grammar struggling to reach the target, eventually bowled out for 117 and resulting in a well deserved victory for Scotch.
Justin Nickolovski won the toss and elected to bowl. Praveen Baskaran and Lachlan O’Shannessy opened the bowling and made break throughs in the third and fourth overs making MGS 2/10. Will Carroll bowled with great success assisted by Charlie Cross taking a good catch and Will followed up by slipping one through the defences of an MGS batsman. Justin Nikolovski picked up a wicket When Raymond Chen took a catch. Roscoe Dray’s opening over was excellent, keeping the ball up and seeming away from the batsman. Ryan Erskine settled after his first over and bowled better in his second. MGS set up a partnership which was broken by a run out by a direct hit from Raymond Chen on the boundary. James Parsell did well with 2/2 and Charlie Cross 1/5. MGS were all dismissed for 125. This appeared to be a gettable target given the small size of the ground. Fifteen wides were bowled by Scotch which made sundries the third top scorer! The out fielders needed to be deeper on the small ground and the fielders needed to attack the ball more often when it was hit to them.
Having bowled MGS the Scotch team were entitled to 30 overs. Roscoe Dray and Charlie Cross set the team up very well with a 58 opening partnership. Unfortunately Ryan Erskin missed a ball on the leg side and was bowled first up. James Parsell made 10 and Will Hewson was bowled without scoring. Will Carroll made 4 and was caught. Charlie Long was run out from a direct hit from point. Then Tom Allen settled things, playing a useful 16 not out and having set up good partnerships with James Parsell and Justin Nikolovski. Justin scored quickly for his 11 not out. Scotch won comfortably - 5 wickets with 4 overs to spare.
Best Performances: Roscoe Dray 24 n.o Charlie Cross 28 n.o, Tom Allen 15 n.o, Raymond Chen; run out, catch and 1/12. Praveen Baskaran 1 for 2, Lachie O’Shannessy, 1/8, Will Carroll 2/7,, James Parsell 2/2, Charlie Cross 1/5
Things to work on: general fielding, running between wickets and picking up quick singles.
Scotch 1st X1 played a friendly match against Old Scotch cricketers. We batted first and made 6/146 runs off 27 overs. At the start Cruickshanks and Clayton made a 30 run partnership followed by another 39 run partnership between Jamie Macmillan and McConnachie both not out. Scotch didn't finish all there 35 overs due to the weather, however sooner or later it cleared. The old Scotch boys made 1/44 off 13 overs. Whitelaw and R.Sinclair made a 47 run partnership before being retired. The rest of the game was washed out.
Scotch 1st X1 played an official practice game against Caulfield Grammar last Saturday. Scotch bowled first and Caulfield scored 4/224 off its 55 overs. Eldridge, Melville and Wolfe getting a wicket each.
In reply Scotch won the game with a very close victory scoring 8/227. Top scorers were Wolfe 54, McMillan 47, Cruickshanks 39 and Bowden 38.
This was a good lead in for the first match in two weeks time against Carey. The First XI will play the Past Students on Wednesday and have a bye next Saturday.
Scotch 2nd XI vs CGS 11/1106
Caulfield won the toss and batted on a flat pitch. Scotch bowlers struggled for consistency and control throughout much of the innings reflecting a lack of match practice. Caulfield took full advantage of the conditions and average bowling building an imposing total of 4/220. This proved well beyond the Scotch batsmen with only Tom Clarke (42) and James Lindsay (34) offering any resistance.
The Year 10a cricket team started the new season in fine style with a very even effort, getting good contributions from all players in their win over Caulfield. Winning the toss & batting first on a good pitch, the team was away to a good start, with the run rate hovering around
3.5 per over for the first 20 overs. Darling provided the backbone of the innings with 92, and was involved in good partnerships with Mather, Ryan and Jaswal. Wickets in hand allowed them to attack in the last 15 overs and a middle order partnership between McKnight and McLean saw the total finish at 9/221. The bowlers then took over, and although early wickets were hard to come by, all bowlers concentrated on line and length to restrict scoring opportunities, and 2 run outs sent quality CGS bats back to the shed. Special mention should be made of Lynch, who took 6 wickets in his second spell to rout the middle order, and set the team up for a pleasing 60 run victory.
Selection will be tough again this week with up to 5 players returning from the unavailable list.
The Year 10B cricket team started the season with a practice match against Caulfield Grammar School. With only 4 players available at the toss, Scotch was forced to bat. Lawrence Martin and Anthony Hamawi got Scotch off to a flyer. Hamawi being run out for 16 (4 x 4's). Richard Chelotti batted well for 19 (run out). Doug Hutchinson also batted well for 17 (run out). The star with the bat was Lawrence Martin who held the innings together with a fine 38 (also run out). Scotch making a hard fought 113.
Scotch took to the field with 8 players. Lachlan Millen bowled with good pace to be the pick of the bowlers (1-20 off 5 overs). Our two spinners in Martin (1-19 off 4 overs) and Chelotti (1-25 off 5 overs) kept the game tight. David Knight was brilliant in the field and Hugh Bismire took two good catches.
Scotch fought the game out to the end. Losing by 30 runs. But with a full team a win would have been possible. Great team effort!
Not a great day out at Caulfield for the 9A and B cricketers…..
CGS 7/190 (Fearn-Wannan 1/44 off 10, Reeves 3/20 off 9, Pachauri 1/19 off 6, McMahon 0/24 off 6, Yam 1/21 off 6, Whittle 1/37 off 9, Stockdale 0/18 off 4)
Def SC 182 (McDonough 23, Pallazzo 23, Jamieson 21, McMahon 56*, Fearn-Wannan 26)
CGS won the toss and elected to bat and made a solid start, reaching 3 for 130. At this stage we were looking at chasing 250 but some disciplined bowling and solid fielding saw us restrict CGS to 190 from their 50 overs. Al Reeves was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 20 from 9 overs. It must be noted that we dropped 4 catches and failed to make a direct hit during our time in the field.
In response we also made a solid start, with McDonough and Pallazzo putting on 45 for the opening stand. We got into trouble by only scoring 27 from over 7 to over 20 (1.5 per over). We must address this facet of the game and be able to change up when required. As a result, we let Caulfield dictate play and we went on to lose 6 for 35 before a resilient partnership between McMahon and Fearn-Wannan saw us get back in the game. In the end we were bowled out for 182 and we probably got the result that we deserved
Scotch 8/104 lost to CGS 6/138.
With many boys not available several C team players from last year took up the opportunity to play in the B team which was very pleasing. We won the toss and batted and a few too many boys played rash shots and got out rather than steadily building their innings. Three exceptions were Cody Hickman, Scott Roberts and Michael Kay. Scott, who also captained the side, batted particularly well and was our only batsman to retire (32 not out). We made 104, which was fairly easily overhauled by a quite talented CGS team. We need to work on bowling a consistent line and length. The boys maintained their enthusiasm and positive spirit throughout which was very pleasing.
Scotch College 7/144 (29 Overs) Defeated Geelong College 7/127 (29 Overs)
Arriving in Geelong, the captain for the day, Conor O’Beirne won the toss and quickly elected to send the opposition in to bat. Opening bowlers Harry Short and Nick Lindsay bowled tightly and without luck. The pressure they applied to the batsmen resulted in a run out, and the score 1/32 at the end of their eight over partnership. After a wayward first over, Conor’s next three overs yielded only 5 runs. The pressure had really been applied by a fielding team full of confidence and support for each other. Praveen Baskaran, Scott Wrigley, Rupert Wills, Sam Starkins and Lachlan Smyth all contributed with the ball to keep the Geelong total to 127 from 29 overs. Lachlan Smyth had the best bowling figures of the day with 3/9 including an attempt at a hat trick.
The Scotch run chase started in disaster with both Harry Philip and Ed Furey being dismissed cheaply and the score at 2/9. Scott Wrigley (43 Retired) and Rupert Wills (35 Retired) were the stars of the innings and took the score to a respectable total. Scotch lost wickets as the inning progressed and it was left to the cool heads of Tim Bate and Nick Lindsay who guided the team to within reach of victory. Victory was obtained with Nick Lindsay (20 not out) and Sam Starkins (6 not out) still at the crease at the end of the 27th over.
Scotch 8A2 v Geelong College 11/11/06 at Geelong College Prep School
Captain: Roscoe Dray lost toss and Scotch asked to bat. A good hard wicket well grassed with a very short boundary.
Scotch made 3/162. All eleven batsmen batted with seven retired. Roscoe Drae 16 n.o, opened the batting sensibly played and looked for singles set up a good partnership with Charlie Cross 25n.o who scored freely hitting five boundaries. Alex Jane came in at three and batted sensibly and was retired at 14 while Justin Nikolovski struck six boundaries in his 25 n.o. Lachlan O’Shannassy was looking good until he played over a delivery and was bowled for 6. Charlie Long cracked a fast scoring 25 n.o while Will Carroll showed some form hitting a 6 in his 14n.o. James Parsell played well and was retired on 6 to give the lower order a go. Paul Furlan and Alistair MacPherson showed that when no body calls for a run confusion occurs and batsmen can get run out. Unfortunately, Alistair failed to face a ball in a circumstance where Alistair should have called early and certain run would have been added to the team score. Will Hewson looked good at the crease after hitting 2 boundaries but threw his wicket away just at the end when the time was up.
Scotch set up a very good target, a difficult score to chase.
Geelong College crumbled being dismissed for 14 runs. Scotch bowled well and at the stumps and took some good catches in the field. 2 assisted run outs and 3 catches (Charlie Long 2 and Alex Jane) Lachlan O’Shannassy took a hatrick 3/1 off 2 overs. Will Hewson bowled well too, with 1/0 off 2 overs. Alex Jane took 1 wicket as well as getting the 12th man out in his one over. Will Carroll 1/5, Charlie Long 0/1, Roscoe Dray 2/3, Alistair McPherson 0/1.
A good start, however we should expect a stronger opponent next Saturday against MGS.
Scotch 1st X1 made 5/270 (Clayton 84, Gelling 57, McConnochie 47), defeated Ivanhoe Grammar 10/123 ( Melville 4/27, Clayton 2/5). A terrific victory against an undermanned Ivanhoe, which continues to give the boys much needed confidence and match practice before the 1st official game.
Scotch 1st X1 played in a friendly practice match against Brighton Grammar School. We batted 1st and made 11/170 runs. Top scorers were Paul McConnochie with 53, James Bowden with 58, and Daniel Wolfe with 17. Brighton Grammar in reply made 8/152. Tom Gelling took 3 wickets.
