Scotch College, the pre-race favourite, Champion Schoolboy VIII for Victoria for 1998 and Head of the River winners for 1998.

All Scotch crews made the 'A' finals with the fourth VIII also winning their division. The fourth VIII in their semi-final created a new race record of 4.33.

First VIII

Scotch College, three quarters of length down during the first thousand metres, half a length down at the 1000 metres, came from behind to overpower Geelong Grammar in the last 500 metres and win by two thirds of a length.
