Mothers Day Morning - 10 May 2008

PASS hosted a Mothers Day morning tea at McKendrick Oval, which was a great success. Congratulations to Tom Kent who won the first prize in the raffle – tickets to the Melbourne Victory vs Juventus match. Many thanks to the parents who catered, with some beautiful tea cakes and sponges on offer. Both coaches and players appreciated the strong support on the day. Thanks also to Melbourne Grammar who hosted a similar morning tea for the 7As and the 8As who played at their home ground on the day.

Soccer Breakfast – 18th April 2008

The Soccer Breakfast is held at the beginning of each season before school on a Friday. It is an opportunity to bring boys, coaches, and parents together. Speakers are invited to stimulate and engage the boys’ interest in the sport.

Last year’s soccer breakfast was a great success and this years was even better!

This year our guest speaker was Jack Reilly, a former Socceroo goalkeeper who represented Australia 35 times between 1970 and 1977 including the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. Mr Reilly is also a Director of Football Federation Australia and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2004. His insights provided Scotch students and their parents with a unique opportunity to hear and discuss football and its future at Scotch and within Australia.

We were also excited to have Archie Thompson and Grant Brebner, Melbourne Victory players attend the breakfast.

Match Reports

This year, we have introduced a weekly match report that will include a brief summary by the team coaches of each of the weekend’s games (from year 7 to the seniors). It is published each Wednesday throughout the season.

Inaugural Rose and Thistle Cup - Scotch vs Melbourne Grammar

This year has seen the introduction of a new tradition between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College. From this year onwards, when the two soccer teams meet during the APS season, they will be playing for the Rose and Thistle Cup. The Rose and Thistle Cup (Rose - of England, MGS and Thistle - of Scotland, Scotch) represents the character of both schools and it's intention is to further develop the bond between the two schools and to increase the profile of the sport in line with its increasing popularity within both communities.

It was an extremely cold, bleak Saturday morning with incessant rain that provided the backdrop for the 1st XI soccer game against Melbourne Grammar at Flack Park on Saturday 17 May for the inaugural cup match. Unfortunately for Scotch the score-line of 2 - 3 in Melbourne Grammar's favour turned out to be as bleak as the weather. In contrast to the freezing conditions on the pitch, a sizeable number of teachers, coaches, boys and parents were welcomed into the warm pavillion for a light lunch. Mike Trotter (MGS Soccer Club Chairman) welcomed the group and congratulated the boys on their game. The inaugural Rose and Thistle Cup was then presented to the captain of the winning MGS team, Tom Banfield by Paul Sheehan (MGS Headmaster). Acting Principal of Scotch College, Ian Savage presented each player with commemorative photos of the two teams. The two Captains also spoke about the game.

Thanks go to the Melbourne Grammar Soccer Club for their warm hospitality and for the commemorative photos produced on the day and presented to all boys on both teams.
