Prep Program:

The Prep Team welcome all boys and their parents to the beginning of their learning journey at Scotch College. Our aim is for each boy to be nurtured, guided and challenged to reach his full potential academically, socially and spiritually in keeping with the Scotch College tradition.

The early stages of Term One are primarily based around the explicit modelling and teaching of rules and routines that will assist your son in making a smooth transition to the Junior Primary area of the school. The Prep Team is here to help your son learn these rules and routines and we would ask you to support us in encouraging as much independence as possible.

A number of successful initiatives introduced in 2012 have already been implemented this year. These include beginning the day with a Guided Reading session where we have nine teaching staff present in the Prep classrooms. We are confident that this program will produce some good results and that your son will develop a passion for reading and an appreciation of books for both pleasure and as a source of knowledge. We will continue to implement a Social Skills program under the guidance of Mr Andrew Strempel, the Junior School Christian Education teacher and counsellor. Successful programs such as Fingergym (muscle strengthening exercises) will also continue this year.

Current Unit of Study:

IIn Term One the Prep boys are learning about their own family history as well as the school’s rich tradition in our new unit, ‘My History and How I Share My Story’. They will investigate their own family tree and develop an understanding of the terms ‘past’, ‘present’ and ‘future’. The boys will visit our own Scotch College archives where they will see and hear stories of the past and possibly make real connections to their father’s or grandfather’s time at the school. We are also hoping to make some connections with the indigenous history of the area, particularly the Yarra River and its native fauna and flora.

In Mathematics we will be focusing heavily on Number with the boys becoming familiar with the number names and words to ten. They will also be introduced and taught elements of Measurement and Geometry as well as Statistics and Probability. Throughout the year, the boys will be encouraged to use mathematical terms and to think, using clear, logical methods. Hands on and manipulative based learning will form the core of our Prep Mathematics program.

Sight words will be given to each boy and he will be tested as he indicates he has mastered the words. Reading at home should be an important part of an everyday routine. In the classroom, boys will read various texts and picture storybooks in a variety of contexts. Thinking tools and routines, along with questions that encourage in-depth responses, will provide scaffolding and guide the boys towards deeper thinking.
