Program
In Term One the Year One students are learning about Mini-Beasts. They will investigate what a mini-beast is and pose questions regarding how mini-beasts live and survive. Students will also learn about the positive and negative effects of mini-beats in relation to the environment. A healthy respect for the importance of mini-beasts in the food chain will be developed throughout the unit.
An excursion has been planned to visit CERES to give the boys a close up view of mini-beasts. Boys will take part in three separate sessions that deal closely with a variety of bugs and small creatures. All sessions will have a hands-on component that research has shown benefits the learning styles of male students. The excursion will take place in early March.
This is the first year that Mr Moloney and Mrs Comport have worked together as a team at the Year One level. While many aspects of the curriculum will stay the same, there will be differences to ensure that the boys experience a challenging and fulfilling year.
In early March the boys will take part in the Year One Outdoor Education program. This special event includes afternoon games, a delicious afternoon tea, a barbeque and evening walk. Mrs Comport and Mr Moloney will be in attendance along with several other Scotch teachers. The evening will conclude by 7.00pm.
Last year’s very successful Prep reading program will continue in Year One with boys placed in like ability reading groups to further advance their oral reading skills and comprehension. The reading program will commence every morning at 10.20am. The book your child reads in the guided reading program will be the book he reads at night to further enhance his complete comprehension of the text. See your child’s teacher for further details about the reading program.
In Mathematics the boys will be studying various aspects of Number and Shape. Students will demonstrate their understanding of place value and counting before moving on to specific areas of the Mathematics curriculum. Any extra work at home that involves solving everyday mathematical problems would benefit your son. For extra guidance about what to do at home contact your son’s teacher.
