Cyclists wheel in the cup
MR JOHN FLYNN TEACHER-IN-CHARGE, CYCLING
Twenty-nine boys raced for Scotch in the Australian Schools’ Cycling Cup competition at the end of Term 2. Racing included BMX, track, mountain bike (cross-country and downhill), and road racing (individual time trial, team time trial, hill climb and road race). There were junior and senior categories.
Our boys stayed at the Dookie campus of Melbourne University with a number of supporter parents who travelled up the Hume Highway to assist.
The teams were the defending champions and so were the ones to watch – and other teams were watching! After three days of hard racing and keen participation, our junior and senior teams emerged as the champion junior and senior boys’ school teams.
The most exciting event was the teams’ time trial, raced out of the Dookie College grounds, in which our teams were victorious by a significant margin. This aspect of bicycle racing, in which sacrifice and teamwork count so much, makes the event a real test of teamwork and preparation.
The team was ably coached by Stuart Proposch (’10), Alastair Crameri (’11) and James Gray (’11) and ably captained by Ben Lee (Year 12) and vice-captain Alistair Grant (Year 12).
