Scotch College

1 What is ScotchNET?

ScotchNET is a browser-based internet facility that gives each student from Years 1 through to 12 details of his current classwork. All homework details, assignment information, assessment task schedules and non-book resources will be available from his home computer's connection to the internet.

This aspect of ScotchNET is called 'Learning Point'.

In addition, each student will be able to log in to a Citrix server which contains specialist software not normally found on home computers. Examples are Inspiration (a diagramming and mind-mapping application), Microworlds (used in Mathematics classes), MapInfo (a Geographic Information Systems application). He will be able to use this software remotely to work on tasks that they have started at school, or start fresh tasks and save them in his network folder.

Complementing ScotchNET is the Scotch Senior School Library home page

2 How do I access ScotchNET?

Links to both aspects of ScotchNET can be found at (http://www.scotch.vic.edu.au), on the Scotch home page.

Clicking on 'Learning Point' will take a student to a login screen(s), where he will be asked for his user name and password. Forgotten passwords can be changed back at school at the Computer Centre. The Library home page is accessible from both 'Learning Point' and the Citrix server.

Learning Point 3 'Learning Point'

The opening screen of 'Learning Point' looks like this:

In the first stage of our development of 'Learning Point', we are concentrating our efforts on ensuring that the academic program of the school is the first priority.

Each student is presented with a customised page showing information relevant to them. A listing of their subjects links direct to the subject page with listing of resources and materials.

Behind the 'Subject departments' icon lie all the subject departments of the school, and material for all classes from Grade 1 through to Year 12.

English Subject Page Senior School

In the Senior School, every class will have a page which looks like this:

Clicking on the icons or on the underlined 'Homework' subheadings give more information, with links and files. The 'Discussion' icon allows a student to contribute to a structured asynchronous discussion whilst out of the class setting.

This means that students who are absent can gain clear and up-to-date information relevant to their class.

Junior School Learning Point Home Page Junior School

In the Junior school, the information is organised around the areas:

My Day
My Classes
MyTasks
My Favourites
My Activities
My Calendar
Student Zone, and
Noticeboard.

Behind each of the icons lies the information that the boys will be working on.

Every class at Scotch College from Grade 1 to Year 12 should have up to date information on homework, assignments, and non-book resources on 'Learning Point'.

Citrix Desktop 4 The Citrix server

Clicking on the Citrix server icon on the Scotch web page will take a student to login screens.

At this stage a typical Windows desktop appears, from which he can access specialist software and his school network folders. This will enable him to continue work started at school, or start fresh tasks and store work.

Scotch Library Homepage 5 The Library home page

This contains a wonderful array of Scotch and Internet resources. It is available from 'Learning Point' (as a button), from the Scotch Home page , or directly from the internet (http://www.scotch.vic.edu.au/Library/library.htm).

The section entitled 'For Scotch Users' will not operate from outside the school without passwords (these may be obtained from the Scotch senior Library).
