Junior School Parents’ Association

BACKGROUND

The Scotch College Junior School Parents’ Association (SCJSPA or JSPA) represents all parents at the Junior School. The JSPA Committee, with the help of Year Level Class Representatives, works to promote friendship amongst parents, and interaction between parents and School.

Main Activities/Events

Parents’ Morning Teas and Social Evenings: These year level events occur in Term 1.Mothers’ Day Lunch and Fathers’ Day Breakfasts : These are very popular events for parents to be rightly honoured and pampered.

Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day Stalls: Stalls with goods tirelessly sourced by JSPA Committee are organised for boys to buy special gifts for their parents on these special days.

Lecture Evening: Once a year, an expert speaker is invited to present on a topic of interest to parents. The purpose of these evenings is to inform parents of current trends and opinions and to generate discussion and debate. In past years we have teamed with the Junior School to support Anti-Bullying inspirational talks for both Parents and Boys.

Biggest Morning Tea: Each year the Cancer Council runs a Biggest Morning Tea to raise money for research. The JSPA have adapted this idea and run a morning tea for the boys in order to raise awareness and raise money for a worthy cause.

Annual Social Evening: A bi-annual event that JSPA Committee organises. Much effort is put into making the night both fun and productive. Previous events included dinner dances, art auctions and cocktail parties.

Junior School Swap Shop: This is located at the end of the corridor opposite the entrance to the Junior School Office. JSPA Committee oversees the day-to-day running of the shop, which is totally staffed by volunteer parent-helpers. The shop opens weekly on a Wednesday morning from 8.00 am until 10.00 am and aims to support and serve the School community in outfitting our boys. Whilst it mainly stocks ‘preloved’ second-hand uniform, it also stocks new School items such as School bags, sport and library bags, art smocks and pencil cases and a wealth of other badged goods.

Family Sports Day: JSPA organises the ever-popular barbecue tent, Cake Stall, Badged Goods stall, coffee stand, and ice-cream trolley. This is a great day for all the Junior School families to catch up either alongside the track or as a volunteer in one of the tents.

Tuckerbox Program: The JSPA run a program where by cooked meals are available for any member of the school community in times of need. The meals are prepared by school families and then stored in a freezer at school. Discretion is paramount. The JSPA rely on class reps to relay a need to the tuckerbox convenor as in times of grief or illness parents may be too consumed with their issues to call out for help.

How to get involved

Support from and participation by parents is vital to the success and smooth-running of all JSPA activities/events. Volunteer parent-helpers are always welcome to help with anything from manning the Mothers’ Day stall to cooking sausages over the barbecue! If you are interested in becoming a Year Level Class Representatives or Committee member then please contact the JSPA President. These positions are filled in Term 4 for the forthcoming year. Parents are encouraged to discuss what the two roles entail by talking to existing Class Representatives and Committee members.
