Scotch College

Multiple Scotch Family celebrationsPresident’s Column

The Foundation Day Concert provided a wonderful focus on the celebration of the 155th anniversary of the beginning of Scotch College.

There were many highlights, however The Butterfly Lovers Concerto was outstanding. It is the result of Scotch’s relationship with Shanghai Music School. Zexun Shen from the Shanghai School joining our cello section for this performance. Congratulations to John Ferguson, all the music teachers, parents and boys who made this special evening.

Perfect weather conditions blessed the House and Form Athletics and Family Day. It was enjoyed by a large gathering of the many members of our community. There was marvellous athletic competition and enormous contribution by many parents in the stalls and activities. So much work goes on behind the scenes to make this day a success. Thank you to all those who helped to make this a memorable day.

The Family Day weekend provides a focus for our Boarding community with the Boarders’ Parents’ Association Cocktail Party, the Boarders’ Revue, Boarders’ Family Chapel Service and Boarders’ Family Barbecue. Thanks must go to Stuart Sizer and all the Boarders’ parents who made this a successful weekend.

The September holidays provided another opportunity for celebration with the opening of the Kapumfi School on the 22 September. School Captain Andrew Bubb and a number of other boys were involved in the school hand-over. Kapumfi has been a magnificent achievement for the School Community.

The Year 12 Valedictory Dinner once again was an opportunity for the Year 12 students and their parents to celebrate and reflect on their time at Scotch. As the VCE examinations approach I wish all the boys good luck and thank them for their contribution to Scotch. I hope their future endeavours are successful.

The Scotch Parents’ Association AGM will be held in the Boykott room on Monday, 13 November. Professor Robin Batterham will be our guest speaker. Robin is the Chief Scientist at Rio Tinto; he will be speaking about science and education. Robin is a passionate scientist who believes that Science Education is vitally important to all students and provides the answers for many issues of sustainability. If you would like to attend please advise reply to sara.wilson@scotch.vic.edu.au no later than Monday 6 November 2006.

Finally I would like to acknowledge the difficulties for those members of our community who are affected by the current drought conditions.
