Firstly I would like to thank my predecessor, Stephen Grover, who has ensured my transition to President was easy and that I am well-briefed and prepared for this year.
Well-briefed and prepared would not describe how I felt this time twelve years ago when our son started at Scotch. For those of you joining the Scotch Community, I appreciate that it can seem a big and daunting establishment. With more than 1,800 students, Scotch is among the largest educational institutions in Australia.
However, the welcomes given at class gatherings, the friendly faces that you begin to recognise and greet, and many shared experiences enjoyed through the auxiliaries, sports and cultural events quickly smooth the way. Help and advice by staff and other parents is also invaluable.
I would encourage you to attend as many gatherings and events as you can comfortably manage. It will help you establish a network for exploring the school, its many activities available and sharing transport tasks. While Scotch may be seen by some as an exclusive school, it really is a very inclusive community. Being part of this dynamic environment is rewarding for parents and demonstrates to the boys the importance of social participation.
Scotch has a magnificent range of sporting, cultural, and travel opportunities for students. The music and drama facilities are probably as good as can be found anywhere.
We doubt that any boy could participate in everything that is available. The School enjoys considerable success in all fields of endeavour and this is largely due to the whole-hearted support given by parents, teaching and sporting staff.
This year our School Captain is Edward Whitelaw, ably assisted by Vice-Captain Mark Rattray. We wish them, and the boys they lead, every success for the coming year.
