Nathan Francis

The Scotch community has been deeply saddened by the tragic death of Year 9 student, Nathan Francis at Cadet Bivouac.

He was a quiet, diligent but fun-loving student who enjoyed the School's program. He was involved in House competitions and was an enthusiastic supporter of charity work, including the 24-Hour Hike. Nathan represented the School in tennis and soccer. As a musician, he was a member of the Intermediate Band at the last Autumn Concert. He was the much-loved son of Brian and Jessica and admired older brother of Justin in Year 6. We extend our ongoing care and support to the Francis family.

For those who attended Nathan’s funeral in the Memorial Hall, it was a privilege to learn more about him. Through Brian and Jessica’s brave eulogies and the loving memories of three Year 9 friends, we gained a more complete understanding of this wonderful young man, and an appreciation of his caring family.

Both Nathan’s parents spoke of their love and admiration for their older son. Brian said he was thankful that when Nathan suggested a game of tennis on the Monday night before Camp, he had agreed. He urged all parents and boys to always make the most of their time together.

The service also made apparent the deep caring in our School community and how it endeavours to support all families.

The tragic events surrounding Nathan’s death meant that many students and staff, beyond his family, friends and teachers, were directly affected. School counsellors have been working with many boys and will continue to do so.

President's Report

Once again our first Term was highlighted by another magnificent win by the 1st VIII in the Head of the River at Nagambie.

Notable also was the fact that the fathers of three members of the 3rd VIII, had been in the same crew of 1976, providing a wonderful sense of continuity. Additionally, good seconds were recorded in cricket, swimming and diving. Thanks also to parents and teachers who provided breakfast and transport for the boys.

During the Easter break, our hockey team travelled to New Zealand for a successful tour. The boys had the pleasure of billeting the Christchurch hockey players on their return trip to Australia.

Many boys have also been practising and rehearsing for Hamlet with PLC, I never saw another Butterfly with Ruyton and the Autumn Concert Series held this week.

On behalf of the SPA, I wish all boys the best for their endeavours in Term 2.
