Family Day

Welcome to Family Day9.00 am

It’s here once again – Family Day as we affectionately call it, or officially, the 93rd Annual House-Form Athletics Family Day.

On Family Day the School always looks its best, thanks to the onset of spring and the tireless work of our wonderful grounds staff. The finely manicured gardens beautifully complement the architecture of the School, and provide the ideal stage for a large-scale event such as Family Day.

We come together today as a united community to support our boys in their athletic endeavours, while soaking up the carnival atmosphere and embracing the competitive house spirit. It’s a day when we celebrate ‘participation’, on and off the field.

A special feature of this year’s Family Day will undoubtedly be the launch of David Baillieu’s wonderful new book Hills of Home. Please come and support David in the Memorial Hall immediately after the Flyer, as he says a few words.

While the weather forecast is looking a little ominous, hopefully the rain will hold off until 4:00pm, allowing everyone the chance to enjoy another wonderful Family Day. Scotch thanks all participants wholeheartedly for playing significant roles today, whether you are contributing your athletic prowess, your barbecue cooking talents, your timekeeping skills, your logistical support or one of the myriad of other aspects of the day.

May the best house win!

Scotch Quarter (400m)12.45 pm

This event is in its inaugural year, replacing championship events.

Meg Mulcahy (Director of Athletics Coaching) in conjunction with Robert Diver (House Coordinator) and Heads of each House, initiated this new race. It is designed to attract top class athletes, who will qualify for the opportunity to compete based on their ability. For this reason it is sure to attract similar levels of interest to the popular ‘Scotch Flyer’.

Scotch Flyer (100m)12.55 pm

The highlight of the athletics program since its inception by former staff member Don Davenport in the 1990s, this 100m invitational handicapped sprint sees the best Scotch runners take on each other in an electric atmosphere, with the track lined on both sides by their schoolmates.

Theodore Panagacos won it in 1996 and felt so inspired by the win, he decided that he would donate a trophy for future winners of the race.

It was at this point that the race took on the title of the ‘Scotch Flyer’.

Close finishes are typical, making it an event not to be missed.

Book Launch of Hills of Home: A Life of Robert Lawson, in the Memorial Hall1.07 pm

Written by former staff member and past parent David Baillieu (staff 1972-2003), this fascinating and painstakingly researched book details the tragic life of Scotch’s little-known first Principal (1851-56).

The Ewen Macdonald 800m Handicap 1.10 pm

Conducted by the Old Scotch Athletics Club, and open to its members and any Old Scotch Collegian, this race has been held annually since 1975 with the exception of a washout in 1992. Now named in memory of Ewen Macdonald, a Scotch and Old Scotch athlete, this race is a real test for competitors of a variety of ages.

Water Polo1.20 pm - 2.05 pm

Members of the Water Polo 1sts take on past Scotch Water Polo players in this annual event. The game is an energetic sport which emphasises swimming ability and ball skill over toughness. It is the most physically demanding of all team games, requiring top performers to cover up to 1.5 kilometres in the pool during the 32 minutes it takes to complete a game, with small breaks between quarters. Come and cheer them on.
