From the President - July 2002
Scotch College is a marvellous place!
Not only does the Social Services program at the school continually demonstrate kindness to so many, but the Library Auxiliary arranged for a luncheon to fall on my birthday! Fortunately, Karen and I were able to attend and we had a most enjoyable time.
The food was delicious and Lorraine Elliott was a very warm, charming and interesting speaker. It was pleasing to see that the lunch was very well attended, providing an opport-unity to catch up with many friends.
Dr Donaldson announced that the Scotch Library Website had won the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Web page of the Year Award from six US and three other Australian schools. As well as this accolade, the Scotch Literature Festival received the IASL International Commendation Award for 2002. This award recognises "outstanding and innovative projects, plans or programs that could serve as models for replication" by other associa-tions. It was wonderful to see Suzette Boyd, Head of Library and Information Centre and her staff receive the praise they so richly deserve. Suzette is heading off to the IASL Conference in Kuala Lumpur in August to present a paper; now she will be collecting two awards as well. Another great achievement for Scotch!
Recently I met Chris Taylor, Head of Art and Design. Since his arrival about ten years ago, Chris whose mild mannered exterior belies his intense involvement with Australian Rugby, has revolutionised Art at Scotch. Chris was keen to show me the impressive work of Christian Borrego, a Mexican, who is in Australia on a three month Travelling Art Scholarship award-ed by the Mexican Government. During this time he spent a week at Scotch, working amongst our students as an Artist in Residence. His current paintings from North Queensland are exhibited in the Teachers Centre Foyer. He has been commissioned to paint a large work on canvas for The James Forbes Academy which will hang on a wall in the Mackie Hall.
I was also pleased to be taken on a tour through the new James Forbes Academy. The interior of the building is even more impressive than its exterior, complementing grandeur with functionality. Recently, David Helfgott rehearsed in one of the many studios. Many of you have been impressed by the building, while others have heard positive reports from your lucky sons who will benefit from its facilities.
Over the Queen's Birthday weekend I was fortunate enough to travel with the VAFA (Victorian Amateur Football Association) to Adelaide where the Victorian Representative squad were playing against the South Australian side. It was my ninth year as team doctor. The young men on the team not only play footy well, but also are a great bunch of guys. It is always a reminder to me of the life-skills team sports teach our sons. A few days after the beginning of third term on Friday 19 July, the First XVIII will be playing Melbourne Grammar for the legendary Cordner-Eggleston Cup. We know they too play footy well and wish them success in this hotly contested match!
I hope you have had a very pleasant and restful second term break and that you and your sons have returned with renewed energy to tackle the second half of the year.
Enjoy life.
