Peter Costello guest speaker as Annual Dinner returns to Leonda

The Peter Costello story

Peter Costello

Peter Costello was first elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party of Australia in May 1994, and has been Federal Treasurer since March 1996. During his period as Treasurer, financial supervision in Australia has been redesigned, arising out of the Financial System Inquiry.

Peter has been a member of the International Monetary Fund Executive, a governor of the World Bank, and chairman of the Council of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

He holds degrees from Monash University, where he was a part-time teacher in law and economics/politics, as well as a member of the University Council.

Prior to entering Parliament, Peter was a barrister. He was counsel in some of Australia’s best known industrial disputes, and was a regular advocate in national wage cases.

Peter is married to Tanya and they live in Melbourne. They have three children.

Peter Costello describes his favourite activity as cooking in his garden at home (badly) and following his beloved football team Essendon (passionately).

An illustrious Old Carey Boy will be guest of honour at the 2006 OSCA Annual Dinner on Friday 26 May – none other than the Federal Treasurer, the Hon. Peter Costello, MP.

The toast to the guests will be performed by Peter’s ministerial colleague, the Hon. Rod Kemp (’63), senator for Victoria, and the Minister for the Arts and Sport.

This year’s dinner has been in the planning for many months, with serious attention paid to feedback received after last year’s event. An OSCA survey revealed that the dinner venue was overwhelmingly a cause of concern.

OSCA is very keen to ensure that this signature event of the year continues to be Australia’s pre-eminent old school dinner. In response, this year’s dinner returns to Leonda by the Yarra, with attendance limited to 500.

To hold ticket prices at current levels, OSCA has attracted five sponsors to support the dinner: Spotless, Goldman Sachs JB Were, Mercedes Waratah Press, TestGrid human resources recruitment and the Foster’s Group. OSCA is most grateful for the support of these very generous sponsors, and urges Old Boys to consider using their services.

OSCA is proud that dinner ticket prices have not risen for the past four years. Prices are $95 for OSCA life members and $99 for non-life members. A $20 discount applies to Young Old Boys (class leavers from 1996 to 2005 inclusive).

For further information please contact Monika Matlik at the OSCA office on 9810 4122 or book online at www.oscanet.com.au.

School Captains and Vice-Captains united by the moment

On Friday 3 March 70 former School Captains and Vice-Captains returned to Scotch for a special reunion. All 70 Old Boys attending the dinner were united by the special bond of school leadership each of them had experienced.

Ian Renard, vice-captain in 1964, spoke eloquently about ‘school and university – the lasting value of inspired teaching’. He reflected fondly about classes led by Ron Bond and others, and the lasting impression that they had made on him. Ed Tudor (captain ‘04) was master of ceremonies. Current School Captain Andrew Bubb spoke with distinction and the Principal, Dr Gordon Donaldson, addressed the group. It is planned to host this dinner every 10 years, in line with our decade reunion timings.
