Service, dedication and selflessness

All the Scotch people who received awards in the Australia Day Honours 2006 have gone above and beyond the call of duty to put back into their communities much more that they have taken out. The work of any of the awardees could be held up as beacons of service, dedication and selflessness. Here are three examples:

1) Roger Gillespie

Roger has devoted many hours to a wide range of organisations. He was a board member of the Scotch College Foundation for 10 years, chairman of the Lauriston Girls’ School council and president of that school’s fundraising foundation. His company has raised more than $1 million to help the 11,500 women and 100 men who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Bakers Delight also provides office space for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. The company has also provided substantial funds to other charities. In addition, each year Bakers Delight provides an estimated $20 million worth of bread left over after each day’s trading to charitable organisations.

2) John Kollosche

John has served the Anglican Church in Perth for well over 20 years. He was a diocesan trustee and treasurer in the ’80s, finance chair at St George’s Cathedral for 10 years, a member of diocesan council for 15 years and the Australian synod from 2001 to 2004. He chaired the Anglicare Winter Appeal for seven years, the committee raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. His board roles have included Methodist Ladies’ College, Perth, St Catherine’s College (University of WA), Anglicare Family Relationship Counselling Services, the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Festival WA Inc. John has been president of Perth OSCA branch since 1996. He credits much of his involvement in church and community to his parents, to Scotch and former chaplain, the Rev. Alec Fraser.

3) Mac Cleland

Mac’s leadership roles in clubs while he was still at School laid the groundwork for a range of secretarial, committee and board roles. Reporting Mac’s OAM, the Frankston Independent newspaper said: ‘Mac retired last year after 22 years as a Director of St John’s Presbyterian Retirement Centre, Somerville … He has also acted as secretary or chairman of a number of church bodies at Frankston Uniting Church. Also, for 18 years he was a member of the board of governors of Toorak College, Mount Eliza. For many years, he was a volunteer at the Frankston Citizens’ Advice Bureau, and acted as honorary solicitor for many local clubs and organisations.” Mac is an active member of the Mornington Peninsula branch of OSCA, and was a committee member for many years.
