On Friday 10 November – a perfect night during a period of otherwise mild spring weather in Melbourne – the Scotch College Army Cadet Unit presented its 18th Tattoo on the Main Oval.
After weeks of rehearsals, the unit was presented to the Reviewing Officer, Lt General Peter Leahy AO, the Chief of Army. General Leahy was very impressed with the high standard of dress, drill and bearing, and complimented the unit accordingly through his address.
Highlights of the parade included the Military and Pipe Band displays (including a 67-strong drum corps), excellent drill and teamwork from all cadets and having the Chief of Army review the parade and present the Australian Defence Force Teamwork and Leadership Awards. Other highlights were the presentation of the Brigadier Lowen Claymore sword to the unit by Mrs Pam Jackman, daughter of Brigadier Ian Lowen AM OBE ED (past Commanding Officer of the Victorian Scottish Regiment and Honorary Colonel of the Australian Army Cadets), and the retreat ceremony performed by the Guard.
The Tattoo is the culmination of the cadet year for all those not returning to School in the following year. It also serves as a fitting tribute to those who have and are currently serving the nation, particularly in deployments in a variety of world theatres of operations.
As in previous years, Major (AAC) Norm Bain, Parade Commander, deserves considerable credit for the overall success of the parade. The Tattoo is a spectacular and unique experience for all, both on and off the parade ground, and is an activity of which the unit is particularly proud.
