Science and Engineering Week sets boys' scientific minds racing
Ten young Scotch boys have won bursaries in the junior section of the 2006 Science Talent Search competition.
The Science Talent Search is an annual, science-based competition open to all primary and secondary students in Victoria. There are nine sections, and the competition is open to all students enrolled in prep through to Year 12 in both government and non-government schools. The theme for 2006 was Australia: Our Dry Continent.
Scotch’s successful young scientists are:
Junior School

Andrew Li (Year 6 – minor bursary): Andrew’s project was aimed at reusing water; a very important commodity to protect.

Timothy Abrahams and Harry Fox (Year 5 – minor bursary): Tim and Harry made a very creative video production entitled Exploring Electricity.

Harry Fox (Year 5 – minor bursary): Harry entered a powered, balsawood boat which he designed and built during his regular Technology sessions in Junior School.
Senior School

Arthur Athan (Year 7 - major bursary): Arthur’s project was a video which investigated three scientific factors affecting Melbourne’s water supply levels.

Simon Ho (Year 7 – major bursary): Simon won his bursary for creating a poster: The Perfect Desert Organism.

James Dawson-Smith (Year 8– major bursary) and Marcus Littlewood (Year 8 – major bursary): James and Marcus won their bursaries for experimental research into MP3 players and noise-induced hearing loss.

Tom Keep (Year 7 – minor bursary): Thomas won his bursary for his photographic entry entitled Erosion: Nature’s Carving Tool.

Simon Ho (Year 7 – minor bursary): Simon won his bursary for a piece of creative writing entitled Living on the Edge.

Matt Nichol (Year 8 – minor bursary): Matthew also won his bursary for a piece of creative writing entitled ‘I’m A Desert Dweller’.

James Snell (Year 8 – minor bursary): James also won his bursary for a piece of creative writing, entitled The Rock Slide.
