What a wonderful occasion it was for visitors to the Scotch Family Day! My family enjoyed it immensely. It was a time of fervent striving by young athletes for the glory of their houses, of enthusiastic staff encouragement of the Junior School boys and their little sisters, of musical excellence displayed by the Pipe Band and ‘Scotch on the Rocks’, and of outstanding displays of many of the School’s activities.
My spirit rejoiced in it all, and I was especially impressed by three fine young men who described their recent trip to Zambia for the official opening of the new school at Kapumfi. This is Scotch at its finest! Here, on unpretentious display, was an example of one of the foundational pillars of our School’s ethos – love of our brothers and sisters in desperate need.
Martin Luther King once said: ‘As long as there is poverty in the world I can never be rich, even if I have a billion dollars. As long as diseases are rampant, and millions of people in this world cannot expect to live more than 30 or so years, I can never be truly healthy. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.’
Scotch College is no fortress of affluence; it is a beacon of magnificent influence in a struggling world. Long may Scotch prosper.
