When the last edition of Great Scot was published, Scotch Old Boys’ Soccer Club was vying for a spot in Provisional League Division 1, a pinnacle the club last occupied back in the mid-’90s. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be.
However, a top-four finish, level on points with arch-rivals Old Melburnians, meant it was still a hugely successful season for a club reborn less than two years ago. Injuries and suspensions didn’t help our cause, but the boys did themselves proud, and will surely go on to bigger and better things in season 2007. Promotion will be high on the agenda, together with increasing playing memberships and possibly introducing a thirds team.
Off the field the club had a very successful year, with three very successful major social events – an open day at Toorak Bowls, an FA Cup night event and the presentation night in late October.
Presentation night was an opportune night to celebrate the club’s 25th birthday and the launch of the club’s annual newsletter. A special 25-year history production gave an insight into the club’s achievements, which include numerous league and cup triumphs, and the club’s recent rebirth. Richard Snape (’81), James Keep (’77) and John Bennetts (’80) were honoured with life memberships for their support of the club since its inception in 1981. There was also the best and fairest countdown, and a raffle and fundraising auction. The Spotless catering was again tremendous. Congratulations to Jaryd Lawless and Nick Jewitt for winning the reserves and seniors best and fairest, and to Rob Gillies and Nick Jewitt for the Golden Boot awards for top goal scorers in their respective teams.
A big thank you to Scotch and to OSCA for their support throughout the year, and for the opportunity to stage the presentation night in the Cardinal Pavilion.
During the off-season the club will launch its website, providing links to relevant sites such as OSCAnet, Soccernet, Football Federation Victoria and many others. Weekly reports, news, updates, club history, players, and much more will feature on the site.
Pre-season training will start in mid-January, and players of all ages are invited to try out. For more information, please contact head coach Eamonn Beamish on 0410 589 536 or club secretary Tim Ward on 0411 115 790.
